Miriam Estany Memorial Fund
Bringing joy and compassion to peoples’ lives was Miriam Estany’s life’s work. She was an irrepressible optimist who took on difficult challenges and found solutions. Her greatest gift was her love and devotion to her husband of 38 years, four daughters and six grandchildren, as well as to her ‘Other Children’ – the ones battling cancer and blood disease.

Ask the Doctor
Held at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, PADRES holds monthly meetings in Spanish
to give parents an opportunity to discuss cancer-related topics in an informal
and relaxed setting. These sessions enable parents to address questions and
concerns to a medical professional, which they may not be able to do during
regular appointments due to language barriers. Child care and refreshments are
provided. For more information, please contact Gerry De La Rosa at (800)
269-4186 ext. 228.
Blood & Marrow Donor Drives
To donate blood is to grant a child the gift of life. PADRES works in close
cooperation with Children's Hospital Los Angeles’ Blood Donor Center and the
National Marrow Donor Program to educate Latino families on the importance of
donating blood and registering as a marrow donor. We also work with prominent
celebrities, media partners and local community leaders to sponsor and
coordinate quarterly blood & marrow donor drives. Child Care and refreshments
are provided. For more information, please contact Gerry De La Rosa at (800)
269-4186 ext. 228.
Cafe Con Leche
What better way to wind down a hectic week than with some fresh brewed coffee
and pastries? Held every Friday evening on the Hematology/Oncology floor, this
gathering allows parents to take a “coffee” break and spend some time with other
parents whose child is also hospitalized. In addition to the great refreshments,
adult crafts and bilingual books and magazines are distributed. For more
information, please contact Gerry De La Rosa at (800) 269-4186 ext. 228.
Community Education
Sessions
It takes an entire community of support to overcome the challenges caused by
childhood cancer diagnosis. This bilingual informational session provides family
members with an orientation to available community resources that will help them
with familiar or economic concerns that arise after a child is diagnosed with
cancer. Child Care and refreshments are provided. For more information, please
contact Gerry De La Rosa at (800) 269-4186 ext. 228.

Feria de Esperanza -
HOPE Fair
This bilingual, conference-style event includes a keynote address on
cancer-related topics, as well as health and well-being educational seminars and
breakout workshops for the entire family. Family Health’s other community
agencies are available on site for medical screenings and other services.
Continental-style breakfast and lunch are provided. For more information, please
contact Gerry De La Rosa at (800) 269-4186 ext. 228.
Lives in Transition
A program funded by the Lance Armstrong Foundation, Lives in Transition provides
age-relevant, cancer-related information to Spanish-speaking parents, patients
and siblings. The initial phase is designed to prepare newly diagnosed families
for the course of treatment and provide essential information to help them
understand and cope with the cancer diagnosis. The youth classes are broken into
Pre-School, School Age, Adolescent, and Pre-Teen age groups and emphasize
understanding of what cancer is and the emotional issues patients and siblings
experience collectively and independently. The adult classes focus on topics
that range from cancer basics to stress management. Child Care and limited
transportation are provided. Continental breakfast and lunch are provided. For
more information, please contact Gerry De La Rosa at (800) 269-4186 ext. 228.
Monthy Clinic Activities
Held at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, PADRES sponsors monthly arts & crafts
activities in the Hematology/Oncology playroom & outpatient clinic. Crafts are
also provided for patients in isolation. For more information, please contact
Gerry De La Rosa at (800) 269-4186 ext. 228.
Padres Apoyando a Padres
PADRES Alumni convene each month to prepare and serve a potluck lunch for
patients and visiting relatives on the Hematology/Oncology, BMT and
Rehabilitation floors at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. The luncheon serves as
a networking session for in-patient families to get to know each other as well
as parents of off-treatment patients who were once in their position. The team
serving the food also benefits from the opportunity to give support and
understanding to those who are under treatment. PADRES prepares a healthy menu
for the team to follow as well as purchases the ingredients and supplies for the
luncheon. For more information, please contact Gerry De La Rosa at (800)
269-4186 ext. 228.
Parent Support Group
Held at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, these bi-monthly support group sessions
are facilitated in Spanish. Child Care and refreshments are offered. For more
information, please contact Gerry De La Rosa at (800) 269-4186 ext. 228.

Posada
To celebrate the holiday season, PADRES hosts Posada, a festive winter party
featuring live entertainment, arts and crafts, a traditional Mexican holiday
meal and a special visit from Santa for the entire family! For more information,
please contact Gerry De La Rosa at (800) 269-4186 ext. 228.
