Sponsor a PADRES ProgramAsk the DoctorHeld at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, PADRES holds monthly meetings in Spanish to give parents an opportunity to discuss cancer-related topics in an informal and relaxed setting. These sessions enable parents to address questions and concerns to a medical professional, which they may not be able to do during regular appointments due to language barriers. Child care and refreshments are provided. Blood & Marrow Donor DrivesTo donate blood is to grant a child the gift of life. PADRES works in close cooperation with Children's Hospital Los Angeles’ Blood Donor Center and the National Marrow Donor Program to educate Latino families on the importance of donating blood and registering as a marrow donor. We also work with prominent celebrities, media partners and local community leaders to sponsor and coordinate quarterly blood & marrow donor drives. Child Care and refreshments are provided. Cafe Con LecheWhat better way to wind down a hectic week than with some fresh brewed coffee and pastries? Held every Friday evening on the Hematology/Oncology floor, this gathering allows parents to take a “coffee” break and spend some time with other parents whose child is also hospitalized. In addition to the great refreshments, adult crafts and bilingual books and magazines are distributed. Community Education SessionsIt takes an entire community of support to overcome the challenges caused by childhood cancer diagnosis. This bilingual informational session provides family members with an orientation to available community resources that will help them with familiar or economic concerns that arise after a child is diagnosed with cancer. Child Care and refreshments are provided. Feria de Esperanza - HOPE FairThis bilingual, conference-style event includes a keynote address on cancer-related topics, as well as health and well-being educational seminars and breakout workshops for the entire family. Lives in TransitionA program funded by the Lance Armstrong Foundation, Lives in Transition provides age-relevant, cancer-related information to Spanish-speaking parents, patients and siblings. The initial phase is designed to prepare newly diagnosed families for the course of treatment and provide essential information to help them understand and cope with the cancer diagnosis. The youth classes are broken into Pre-School, School Age, Adolescent, and Pre-Teen age groups and emphasize understanding of what cancer is and the emotional issues patients and siblings experience collectively and independently. The adult classes focus on topics that range from cancer basics to stress management. Child Care and limited transportation are provided. Continental breakfast and lunch are provided. Monthy Clinic ActivitiesHeld at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, PADRES sponsors monthly arts & crafts activities in the Hematology/Oncology playroom & outpatient clinic. The team serving the food also benefits from the opportunity to give support and understanding to those who are under treatment.
