PADRES Contra El Cáncer has partnered with City of HopeTM to offer parents of children who are survivors of leukemia or a brain tumor, and who have completed treatment the opportunity to participate in a new City of HopeTM intervention study funded by the National Cancer Institute.

In recent years, research studies interested in the psychosocial issues and quality of life of children who have survived cancer have noted that some children and adolescents have learning and/or behavioral difficulties following their cancer experience. These difficulties range from very mild to significant, and may negatively impact learning and academic performance as well as contribute to school related distress.

Concerned parents across the country have expressed an interest in learning how to optimize their child’s learning and academic experiences despite long-term effects from cancer treatment. City of HopeTM committed to responding to this need as they believe, based on prior research, that there are indeed ways to facilitate and improve learning and school performance in cancer survivors. As parents are the most enduring and influential source of support in their children’s lives, City of HopeTM is particularly interested in working with parents so that they may help their children progress and learn to the best of their ability. This program is designed to increase a parent’s knowledge about things they can do to improve their child’s learning and school performance. Over the course of the study, their child will be formally assessed to determine whether or not his/her cognitive, academic, and behavioral functioning improves as a result of your participation in the program.
